Principles towards sustainability

Show the commitment of pulp and paper companies to Brazil’s sustainable development. This is the main objective of the Letter of Principles, launched in 2010 by the Associação Brasileira de Celulose e Papel (Bracelpa – Brazilian Pulp and Paper Association).

The document is the result of analyses and systematization of the member companies’ environmental, sustainability and social responsibility policies. It seeks to promote and guide the members’ actions in five areas: Ethics, Relations with Audiences of Interest, Commitments, Environment, Regulations and Legislation.

The Letter is also an important tool to strengthen the communication of the industry’s good practices, since it shows an ongoing commitment to the sustainable development of Brazil.

Among the main topics of the Letter, it highlights the use of wood from legal sources and exclusively from planted forests that are managed in a sustainable manner and with minimal environmental impacts.

Companies have been, also, encouraging forest management certifications and the responsible, sustainable utilization of natural resources, so as to promote social and environmental balance.

Contributing to conserve biodiversity and helping reduce the effects of climate change – an issue of increasing relevance to the pulp and paper industry – are among other priority actions addressed in the text.

The document also discusses the importance of establishing and maintaining responsible dialogue with audiences of interest, seeking to provide value for society based on the companies’ relationships.
