Bracelpa
On Sept/02/1997, the National Association of Pulp and Paper Manufacturers, established in 1932, adopted a new name: Brazilian Pulp and Paper Association-Bracelpa. The entity is responsible for the institutional representativeness of the sector in the country and abroad. Its actions are conducted within an industrial sector with highly competitive world class products facing a globalized and extremely active market. In its production process, the sector only uses wood from planted forests (eucalyptus and pine) coming from planted forests. Reforesting uses degraded areas and is an activity that acts as a factor that helps the labor force to remain in the rural areas and, also, it avoids native woods deforesting.
Bracelpa, with headquarters in São Paulo, is the Brazilian pulp and paper sector representative. Its Deliberative Council comprises representatives from the eight Employers' Unions and State Associations in Brazil. Its members account for the total Brazilian production of pulp and more than 80% of the Brazilian paper production.
For this sector, favored with intrinsic competitive edges - especially the forest plantations and the constant technological upgrade and management - the economic development process currently occurring in the country is expected to even improve its estimated outcomes. The forestry Brazilian industry is investing, supported by these competitive edges, aiming at holding and expanding its position as a global player, in order to strengthen the production chain with a supply of products with a higher added value.
Another competitive edge for the Brazilian business of pulp and paper, represented by Bracelpa, is that Brazil has a modern industrial complex, which is perfectly adequate to supply the society demands and operates under environmental technological standards that are stricter than in several other producing countries.
In the international area, Bracelpa actively participates in the CICEPLA - Confederação Industrial da Celulose e do Papel Latino-Americana (Latin America Pulp and Paper Industrial Confederation) and in the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations. Bracelpa also participates in the Advisory Committee on Paper and Wood Products from FAO/UN.
The strong international action of Bracelpa is focusing on the strategic vision and is totally dedicated to pave the route towards the development of a strong business relationship among its members, therefore equalizing the fair balance of these premises with the interest of our industry.
Domestically, Bracelpa is in charge of a strong institutional task, together with government officers and other Brazilian society institutions, to reinforce the sector's activities, enhancing its important participation in the economic and social development of the country. Among the issues that are being supported by the entity we should mention the expansion of the planted forest areas in Brazil and the incentive to integrate small and middle size producers into the industrial process, by means of forestry fostering actions.
Mission
Bracelpa's mission is to offer a service that is not only institutional but of a political nature as well, based on a solid and reliable technical structure. The goal is to offer the best outcome conditions to its members so to allow them to create employment and to improve the social benefits that may emerge from economic development.
Bracelpa was established on April 15th, 1932 as Paper Manufacturers Federation, seated in Rio de Janeiro and the first elected President was Cícero da Silva Prado.
On December 22nd, 1944, the old name changed to Paper Manufacturers National Association, as voted by an unanimous election from the Executive Members, under the Presidency of Antonio Bezerra Cavalcanti, who remained president until 1959. Complying with the articles of incorporation, the association opened a São Paulo section to serve the manufacturers who had headquarters in the State of São Paulo.
On August 11th, 1959, Ferrucio Celani accepted to be the president and he remained in the position until 1968.
From 1968 to 1971, the president was Luis Chaloub.
On July 26th, 1968, there was a new change in the corporate name: it became Pulp and Paper Manufacturers National Association - ANFPC (Associação Nacional dos Fabricantes de Papel e Celulose).
In 1964, with the establishment of an association in São Paulo (Associação Paulista dos Fabricantes de Papel e Celulose) the section created in 1959 in the city of São Paulo was closed and the estate at Praça da República, 386, 5th floor was sold.
On December 22nd, 1971, the members, unanimously, voted for the transference of the headquarters to São Paulo and elected Jamil Nicolau Aun for president for the next term (1971/1974). That was when the building at Rua da Alfândega 108, 9th floor, in Rio de Janeiro was donated to the new Southeast Regional Association of the Pulp and Paper Manufacturers.
Already with its headquarters installed in São Paulo, the members elected Samuel Klabin for the 1974/1977 term.
Samuel Klabin was re-elected president for the following term (1977/1980) but, unfortunately he died in March 1979, before finishing his term. H.Horácio Cherkassky completed that term and was the president until his death in 1994.
In 1994, the association – ANFPC – elected Osmar Elias Zogbi for president and, on September 2nd, 1997, aiming at strengthening the interests of the pulp and paper Brazilian industry, two associations merged into one. That happened when ANFPC (Pulp and Paper Manufacturers Association) and ABECEL (Associação Brasileira de Exportadores de Celulose – Brazilian Association of Pulp Exporters) joined efforts and established one sole entity: Associação Brasileira de Celulose e Papel – BRACELPA. The mission of this new association was to represent the sector throughout the country and abroad. Its first president was Osmar Zogbi until June 1998.
During the 1998/2000 and 2000/2002 terms, Bracelpa had Boris Tabacof as president, and 2002/2006 for Sr. Osmar Zogbi.
Currently, the president (CEO) is Horacio Lafer Piva, and Bracelpa has representatives of all segments and products of the business.
