RECYCLING
History
"In Brazil, recycling is very closely linked to the origins of papermaking itself, which started some 100 years ago.
The very first Brazilian papermakers usually made use of paper waste to make new paper. By that time, almost all the Brazilian demand was supplied by foreign suppliers.
The next step for the Brazilian industry was the use of imported virgin raw material, especially the use of pulp from softwood (long fibers).
Only in the beginning of the 70's, the Brazilian pulp industry starts to thrive and papermakers start to use domestic virgin raw material, together with imported raw material.
Whereas papermaking, based on virgin raw material, was prospering, the recycling activity also grew as a result of a higher availability of recyclable paper.
Thus, we can see that paper recycling in Brazil was essentially based on economic reasons.
More recently, paper recycling is becoming even more important as it contributes to environmental preservation as well as a help to solve the growing problem of urban waste destination."
